About Arcola Mills Historic Foundation

Arcola Mills Historic Foundation is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit that owns, preserves, and programs a roughly 50–55 acre historic and natural site on the St. Croix River north of Stillwater, Minnesota. The foundation operates the 1847 Mower House (one of Minnesota’s oldest timber-frame homes), manages the sawmill ruins and riverfront, and offers seasonal educational programming in history, the arts, and environmental stewardship. In recent years the foundation has focused heavily on habitat restoration and stewardship while preparing the site to reopen for public programs and events. Activities in the last 2–3 years include multi-acre invasive-species removal, native planting and shoreline restoration carried out with partner organizations and restoration crews, funded in part by competitive state and nonprofit grants.

Notable achievements

Conservation Partners Legacy Grant (state)

Secured a significant state Conservation Partners/Outdoor Heritage grant in 2023 to support multi-acre habitat restoration along the St. Croix River, enabling large-scale invasive species removal and native-plantings.

Multi-year ecological restoration

Launched and executed an intensive restoration program (starting in 2021) that removed invasive shrubs and trees and planted native trees and shrubs across key riparian and ravine areas, with on-the-ground work done by professional crews and conservation corps teams.

Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage grant (condition assessment)

Received an Arts & Cultural Heritage (Legacy) grant to fund a professional condition assessment of the historic Mower House and related structures, supporting prioritized preservation work.
