CENTER FOR HMONG ARTS & TALENT
CHAT exists to nurture, explore, and illuminate the Hmong American experience through artistic expressions.
About CENTER FOR HMONG ARTS & TALENT
The Center for Hmong Arts & Talent (commonly known as CHAT) is a Saint Paul–based, multidisciplinary Hmong arts organization that presents theatre, music, fashion, dance, visual arts, and youth arts programs and operates as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) (EIN 41-1771925). ([projects.propublica.org](https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/411771925))
CHAT runs sustained youth development and community arts programming — including longstanding initiatives such as the Art Saves Us youth program and the Fresh Traditions fashion program — and positions arts practice as a vehicle for cultural preservation and leadership development. ([aboutchat.org](https://www.aboutchat.org/))
In the last several years CHAT has remained active producing public events and fashion showcases (including a Hmong Thai designer showcase in spring 2023 and Fresh Traditions productions at major local venues in 2024), and the organization continues to receive local arts funding and municipal cultural grants to support programming. Notable achievements
Fresh Traditions — longrunning Hmong fashion showcase
Fresh Traditions is an annual CHAT-produced fashion program that showcases Hmong designers, provides mentorship and production experience, and has been staged at major venues in the Twin Cities in recent seasons (including a RiverCentre presentation in 2024). International designer collaborations
CHAT has expanded its Fresh Traditions programming to include international Hmong designers — notably producing a Hmong Thai Fashion Show in April 2023 that highlighted designers from Thailand and cross-border Hmong design traditions. Sustained youth arts impact
Through programs such as Art Saves Us and a multi-disciplinary youth leadership track, CHAT has provided regular arts instruction, transportation supports, and leadership opportunities to Hmong youth (historically serving on the order of nearly two hundred youth annually) and continues to focus on youth development through the arts.
