About Retrieve A Golden Of Minnesota (dba Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest, RAGOM)

Retrieve A Golden Of Minnesota (doing business as Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest, RAGOM) is a volunteer-based 501(c)(3) rescue that rescues, fosters, and places Golden Retrievers and Golden-mix dogs. RAGOM operates primarily in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and western Wisconsin and uses a network of foster homes rather than a traditional shelter model.

The organization focuses on comprehensive veterinary care, behavior support, and placement programs (including foster-to-adopt and a sanctuary program) to increase placement success and reduce returns. RAGOM publishes annual reports and financial information and maintains a donor-facing web presence to support adoptions, fostering, volunteer engagement, and fundraising.

In recent years RAGOM has continued to expand placement supports and streamlining for adopters and fosters, emphasizing programs that remove barriers to adoption and provide behavior/trainer support for harder-to-place dogs.

Notable achievements

10,000+ Rescued & Rehomed

Since its founding in 1985, RAGOM has rescued and rehomed more than 10,000 Golden Retrievers, mixes, and honorary Goldens, demonstrating long-term sustained impact in its service region.

2023 Operational Impact

In the 2023 fiscal year RAGOM reported adopting 294 dogs (including 159 dogs rescued from commercial breeding), an average veterinary cost of roughly $1,140 per dog, and implementation of a foster-to-adopt pathway that placed 66 dogs—measurable program growth and investment in medical and behavioral care.

Behavior & Sanctuary Programs

RAGOM implemented targeted programs to remove barriers to adoption: a Shy/Fearful Dog program, a training partnership that provides certified-trainer support to fosters and adopters, and a sanctuary program to provide lifetime care for dogs not suitable for rehoming.
