About GREAT RIVER GREENING

Great River Greening is a Minnesota-based 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit headquartered in Saint Paul that leads community-centered habitat restoration and stewardship across the state. The organization uses science-based practices to restore and sustainably manage prairies, forests, wetlands, shorelines, and urban green spaces while engaging volunteers, students, and municipal partners. In its 2024 reporting Great River Greening documented more than 10,000 acres restored or sustainably managed in a single year, reflecting expanded capacity for large-scale habitat work across Minnesota.

Biochar pilot implementation

Led a state-funded pilot to deploy a portable biochar kiln and test biochar production from removal of woody invasive species, reducing open-pile burning and producing soil amendment for restoration projects.

Expanded volunteer and youth engagement

Over recent years the organization significantly expanded community programming—engaging thousands of volunteers and hundreds of youth in stewardship, school-based native planting projects, and service-learning tied to green career pathways.
