COMMUNITIES ORGANIZING FOR HAITIAN ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
COFHED’s mission is to partner with marginalized communities in the mountains of southern Haiti to discover, create and realize their own vision of socioeconomic development for lasting transformation.
About COMMUNITIES ORGANIZING FOR HAITIAN ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
Communities Organizing for Haitian Engagement and Development (COFHED) is a Haitian-led 501(c)(3) established in Minnesota in 2001 that supports community-led development in rural southern Haiti. The organization partners with villages to strengthen local leadership, education, health services, agroforestry, and microcredit enterprises while prioritizing community decision-making and women’s participation.
COFHED implements a community-engagement model that trains local facilitators and emerging leaders, supports locally run clinics and schools, and fosters economic initiatives such as community microcredit. In recent years COFHED has documented recovery and rebuilding work following the 2021 earthquake, continued agroforestry and nursery programs, and published an annual impact report (2025) describing program results and community-level outcomes.
Notable achievements
Rebuilt community schools
Partner communities led reconstruction of school buildings damaged in the 2021 earthquake; new structures incorporating earthquake‑resistant features were completed and in use by the end of the 2023 academic year.
Scaled microcredit program (MOFADEL)
Supported a female-led microcredit cooperative in Lougou that grew to serve hundreds of members, providing locally managed loans and strengthening community financial resilience.
Published 2025 Impact Report
Released a comprehensive organizational impact report documenting program outcomes, community-led successes, and operational transparency for the most recent fiscal year.
