About Great North Innocence Project

The Great North Innocence Project (GNIP) is a regional, donor-facing 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Minneapolis that provides free legal representation to people claiming wrongful conviction and works to prevent future wrongful convictions across Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. GNIP combines direct casework, litigation, collaboration with conviction review units, law student clinic partnerships, and policy advocacy to identify and remedy wrongful convictions and to promote systemic reforms that reduce the risk of similar errors. In recent years the organization has remained active — handling hundreds of intake applications each year, participating in conviction review processes, securing exonerations, and contributing to criminal justice reform initiatives in the region.

Has secured multiple exonerations and releases for clients; the organization reports double-digit exonerations since its founding and reported clients freed in recent years, demonstrating ongoing impact in litigation and case review.

Conviction Review Unit Partnership

Worked with the Minnesota Attorney General’s Conviction Review Unit (and local conviction integrity units) to develop referral pathways and support independent reviews, expanding avenues for post-conviction relief in the state.
