About THE DRAGONFLY PROJECT

The Dragonfly Project is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Minneapolis that assembles and mails condolence packets—each containing a sympathy card, the Dragonfly story, and a dragonfly keychain—to people who are grieving. Volunteers identify recent obituaries and send packets generally three to six months after a death, and the organization also offers packet orders through its online store so individuals can share hope directly with friends and family.

Founded from a single act of compassion in 2002 and formally incorporated with tax-exempt status in 2005, The Dragonfly Project operates nationally and internationally and is governed by a volunteer board and a small volunteer staff. In recent years the group has published annual reports, continued regular packet distribution, and updated leadership (a new Executive Director joined in May 2025), demonstrating continuing, active operations and community engagement into 2026.

Notable achievements

Large-scale packet distribution

The organization reports that it sends thousands of Dragonfly packets each year across the United States and to other countries, providing repeated, measurable outreach to people in grief.

Sustained volunteer-led operation

Operated primarily by volunteers since its founding, the charity has maintained continuous programming and governance (board of directors and executive leadership) for more than two decades.

Maintained financial stability

In recent filings and annual reports the organization has demonstrated stable finances with net assets in the hundreds of thousands and continued annual revenues sufficient to sustain its packet program and volunteer operations.
