MINNESOTA MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION
The mission of MMEA is to develop, promote, and support equitable and comprehensive music learning and teaching in Minnesota.
About MINNESOTA MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION
The Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) is the state professional association for music educators in Minnesota, founded in 1938 and recognized as a tax-exempt organization by the IRS since December 1965. MMEA serves music teachers, school music students, and the broader school-music community through professional development, honors ensembles, festivals, publications, and advocacy for supportive education policy. MMEA organizes the annual MMEA Midwinter Convention (professional development and performances), statewide All‑State ensembles and camps, elementary and middle‑level festivals, and honors programs such as the Digital Music Media Honors Program. Recent activity includes Midwinter Convention programs in February 2024 and February 2025, ongoing All‑State ensemble activity through February 2026, and active publication of convention resource books and the professional eZine "Interval." MMEA also partners with higher-education institutions and statewide stakeholders to support teacher development, student performance opportunities, and equity-focused professional learning, maintaining an active membership model and donor-facing presence for contributions and sponsorships.
Notable achievements
Longstanding All‑State honors program
MMEA has run statewide All‑State ensembles since 1944 (the first All‑State concert was held October 27, 1944), providing multi-tiered honor ensembles and camps that bring together top student musicians from across Minnesota.
Annual Midwinter Convention — primary statewide professional gathering
MMEA's Midwinter Convention is the state’s largest professional development and performance event for music educators; recent conventions took place in February 2024 and February 2025 and MMEA continues to publish convention resource books and schedule sessions and performances for future conventions.
Sustained educator resources and programs
MMEA produces ongoing professional development (sessions, P.I.T. Stop practical clinics), the Interval professional eZine, festival programming (elementary through middle/secondary), and honors programs including the Digital Music Media Honors Program, supporting teacher growth and student opportunities across the state.
