About Saranaloka Foundation
Saranaloka Foundation is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves as the financial steward for Aloka Vihara and the Aloka Earth Room, supporting Theravada Buddhist nuns in residential monastic training, practice, and public-facing programs. The organization sustains the Four Requisites (food, clothing, lodging, medicine) for resident monastics and funds retreats, teachings, and local Earth Room activities for the Bay Area community. In recent years Saranaloka has expanded its on-the-ground presence: Ayya Santacitta opened Aloka Earth Room in San Rafael in April 2023 and the foundation has hosted ongoing local programs (Earth Listening Circles, retreats and workshops) and seasonal residential retreats through 2024–2026. Financially the foundation reported materially larger revenue and a strengthened asset base in 2023, reflecting increased donor support and one-time asset activity that have improved its capacity to sustain monastic housing and program activity.
