GREENACTION FOR HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE
Greenaction mobilizes community power to win victories that change government and corporate policies and practices to protect health and to promote environmental, economic, social and climate justice.
About GREENACTION FOR HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE
Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice is a San Francisco–based, multiracial grassroots organization that works with low-income, working-class, rural, and Indigenous communities to prevent and remedy pollution, protect public health, and advance environmental justice. In recent years Greenaction has combined community organizing, community science, administrative petitions, and litigation to press for stronger cleanups and regulatory decisions — including a December 7, 2023 notice to sue the U.S. Navy and EPA over the Hunters Point Shipyard cleanup and a federal suit filed in 2024 — and has continued Indigenous lands and frontline community campaigns through 2024–2025 while maintaining leadership and community-education programs.
Notable achievements
Hunters Point cleanup litigation
Greenaction pursued administrative and legal actions challenging the adequacy of the Hunters Point Shipyard Superfund cleanup; the organization issued a notice to sue in December 2023 and pursued litigation in 2024 to seek a more protective remediation and stronger government oversight.
Indigenous lands campaigns & leadership academy
Greenaction sustained multi-year campaigns supporting Indigenous communities (including work with the White Mesa Ute community) and ran community leadership and environmental justice training programs documented through 2024–2025, aimed at empowering local youth and tribal members to engage in advocacy and stewardship.
Longstanding frontline community victories
Over multiple decades Greenaction has supported frontline communities across California and the U.S. (including Bayview–Hunters Point, Kettleman City, and other impacted areas) to secure policy and permitting changes, build community science capacity, and amplify local health and environmental justice concerns.
