About INTERNATIONAL LITERACY AND DEVELOPMENT

International Literacy and Development (ILAD) is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2011 that partners with marginalized, low-resource language communities to build literacy, human language technology, and economic-development solutions in the languages those communities use. In recent years ILAD has operated programs across a range of countries and in the Dallas–Fort Worth area, focusing on local-language literacy, ESL and citizenship training for refugee communities, and development of language technology tools to increase access to information. ILAD’s recent program work (2022–2024) includes mobile data-collection and app development for under-resourced languages, microenterprise support for women entrepreneurs, and literacy and health education for Rohingya refugee families in Texas.

Notable achievements

Human Language Technology & App Development

Developed AI-assisted tools and several apps (including a Rohingya English basics app and a Windows bulk-translation tool) to support machine translation and expand access to written and audio materials for low-resource language communities.

Large-scale language data collection

Deployed a mobile app to collect lexical data for Gondi and related dialects, adding over 37,000 words to ILAD’s language dataset to support dictionary creation and translation development.

Local microenterprise and literacy impact

Implemented community-driven literacy classes and microenterprise projects (e.g., a jewelry microenterprise run by seven women) and ran ESL, citizenship, and health-education programs serving refugee families in the Dallas area and overseas projects benefiting dozens of households.
