About HAWAII SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra (HSO) is the primary professional symphony orchestra serving Honolulu and the state of Hawai‘i. The organization presents a full season of Masterworks, HapaSymphony and popular/film-in-concert programming, together with statewide and community concerts designed to broaden access to orchestral music. HSO maintains an active education and outreach portfolio — including school concerts, the Nā Hōkū ʻŌpio Young Stars competition, and other family- and school-focused programs — and reports annual reach into the tens of thousands through performances and learning programs. In recent years HSO has expanded artist collaborations and community projects while continuing to rebuild and grow its season and audience engagement following pandemic disruptions.

Notable achievements

Appointment of Music & Artistic Director

Dane Lam was appointed HSO’s first Music & Artistic Director by unanimous board action; his five-year appointment began with the 2023–24 season and has guided new programming and community engagement initiatives.

The Bach Project with Yo-Yo Ma

HSO presented and partnered in Yo-Yo Ma’s The Bach Project events in Hawai‘i, bringing a high-profile international artist to the islands along with community-facing activities tied to the project (including public performances and local engagement programs).

Expanded youth and education programs

HSO launched and scaled education initiatives including the annual Nā Hōkū ʻŌpio | Young Stars competition and multiple free/low-cost school and family concerts that place students onstage with the orchestra and reach thousands of local students each year.
