About FRIENDS OF BERKELEY ANIMAL CARE SERVICES

Friends of Berkeley Animal Care Services (FoBACS) is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit that raises funds and provides programmatic support to Berkeley Animal Care Services, the municipal open-admission shelter serving Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, and Piedmont.

FoBACS funds life-saving medical treatment, adoption fee sponsorships, enrichment and training programs, and special projects that improve animal welfare and increase live outcomes. In fiscal year 2024 the organization reported revenue of $90,180, expenses of $70,802, and net assets of $208,036, enabling continued support for shelter medical care, kennel enrichment, adoption sponsorships and capital improvements.

Notable achievements

Aquatic Park training-area fencing donation (2024)

Provided a cash donation of up to $16,000 (initiated in 2024) to fund installation of fencing for the Aquatic Park animal training area; the City of Berkeley accepted the donation via a City Council resolution.

Shelter play-yard and enrichment funding

Secured and distributed funds to create non-public play yards and enrichment infrastructure for shelter dogs (including major donor support used to build off-leash play areas), reducing kennel stress and supporting higher-quality meet-and-greets that improve adoption outcomes.

Sustained medical and adoption support

Consistently funds life-saving medical treatments, clinic equipment, supplies for fosters and adopters, and adoption-fee sponsorships for long-stay or medically needy animals; FY2022–FY2024 filings show the organization regularly directs contributions to medical care, enrichment and adoption programs.
