About CHALEARN

ChaLearn is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 45-3085009) headquartered in the San Francisco/Berkeley area that organizes open scientific competitions and benchmarks to push the state of the art in machine learning. Founded in 2011, ChaLearn runs challenge series and workshops across AutoML/AutoDL, meta‑learning, computer vision, reinforcement learning, and domain‑specific tasks such as biomedical and connectomics problems. The organization partners with academic labs, industry sponsors and major conferences to host community-driven competitions whose datasets, baselines and evaluation code are generally released to promote reproducibility and follow-on research. In the last 2–3 years ChaLearn has been active in organizing high‑profile competitions (for example the NeurIPS 2023 Machine Unlearning Challenge), launching new series (AutoSurvey) and collaborating on multi‑institution projects (FAIR Universe, connectomics and EEG foundation challenges).

Notable achievements

AutoML / AutoDL challenge series

Organized influential AutoML and AutoDL competitions that produced benchmark datasets, baseline code and peer‑reviewed publications—advancing automated model selection and evaluation practices in the research community.

L2RPN (power‑grid RL) series

Coordinated the Learning to Run a Power Network challenges in partnership with grid operators and research labs, driving progress on reinforcement‑learning methods for realistic power‑system control tasks.

NeurIPS 2023 Machine Unlearning Challenge

Hosted the NeurIPS 2023 competition track on machine unlearning, engaging international teams and producing reproducible evaluation code and published results that informed follow‑on work on privacy and model deletion.
