CALLISTO
Callisto's mission is to use technology to empower survivors of sexual violence.
About CALLISTO
Callisto (also known as Project Callisto) is a San Francisco–based nonprofit that provides an encrypted, trauma-informed online platform (Callisto Vault) that lets survivors create timestamped records, use a cryptographic Matching System to detect serial perpetrators, and access confidential legal options counseling. Founded to give survivors a safer, privacy-preserving alternative to formal reporting, Callisto partners with colleges and community organizations to identify repeat offenders and support survivors' choices. As of fall 2023 the organization expanded access to every college in the U.S., and users from nearly every state have created accounts. In September 2024 Callisto announced a planned closure because of a funding crisis; a public and private fundraising effort in FY2025 raised substantial emergency support and allowed the organization to remain operational and prepare to expand services further.
Notable achievements
Expanded access to every U.S. college (Fall 2023)
Callisto broadened Vault availability so that any student at a U.S. college can create an account, increasing the platform’s national reach and enabling cross-campus matches.
Impact Report 2025 — 'Back from the Brink'
After announcing a planned shutdown in September 2024 due to funding shortfalls, Callisto’s supporters raised emergency funds in FY2025 that allowed the nonprofit to continue operations and plan for expansion.
Pioneered encrypted Matching System
Callisto developed a privacy-preserving cryptographic matching system that lets survivors discover if others identified the same perpetrator without revealing identifying information, then connects matched survivors to free legal-options counselors.
