About LITTLE FREE LIBRARY LTD

Little Free Library is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in St. Paul, Minnesota, that supports a global, volunteer-led network of neighborhood book-sharing boxes. The organization equips volunteer stewards, promotes equity-focused programs, and grants no-cost libraries to high-need and Indigenous communities to expand 24/7 access to books. In recent years LFL has scaled both reach and programming — launching and growing initiatives such as the Impact Library Program, the Indigenous Library Program, and Read in Color to place libraries and diverse books where they are needed most. The nonprofit also maintains a searchable world map and steward support services while working with schools, libraries, and community partners to strengthen literacy and neighborhood connection. LFL positions itself as an equity-minded literacy organization: it emphasizes placing libraries in book deserts, championing diverse books (including BIPOC and LGBTQ+ titles), and measuring community impact through steward surveys and program outputs.

Notable achievements

Impact Library Program Grants

Scaled grantmaking through the Impact Library Program, awarding thousands of no-cost Little Free Libraries to high-need communities, including a targeted rollout of 200 libraries to Title I elementary schools during the 200,000th-library celebration.

Read in Color — Diverse Books Distribution

Developed the Read in Color initiative to champion diverse voices; since launch it has placed hundreds of Read in Color libraries and distributed tens of thousands of multicultural and LGBTQ+ titles to better represent readers’ identities in community collections.
