About Open Source Hardware Association

The Open Source Hardware Association (OSHWA) is a U.S. nonprofit (501(c)(3)) organization that advocates for open-source hardware, maintains the community certification for open hardware, and organizes community events that advance open design, reproducibility, and equitable access to technology.

OSHWA’s core work includes running the Open Hardware Summit, administering the Open Source Hardware certification program, publishing resources and guidelines, and coordinating community initiatives such as Open Hardware Month and fellowships that support creators, researchers, and educators worldwide.

Notable achievements

Sustained certification program

Built and maintains a widely used, community-driven Open Source Hardware certification and public registry that makes it easy to identify hardware released under the community definition.

Annual Open Hardware Summit

Continues to convene the global open-hardware community through the Open Hardware Summit, most recently producing in-person and livestreamed summits that amplify research, tools, and collaboration.

Grant-funded work on medical/open-health hardware

Secured grant support to research and develop frameworks for open-source hardware in rapid-response health contexts and to explore a medical/health-specific certification pathway, enabling growth of staff and targeted program development.
