About HMONG AMERICAN FARMERS ASSOCIATION

The Hmong American Farmers Association (HAFA) is a member-led nonprofit founded in 2011 to support Hmong American farmers in Minnesota through land access, bilingual/bicultural training, market development, cooperative enterprises, and policy advocacy. HAFA operates as a farmer-centered organization that combines on-the-ground farming services with organizing and research to increase economic opportunity for its members. In recent years HAFA has expanded its direct farming and market operations: it purchased a 155-acre HAFA Farm in Dakota County in September 2022 to provide long-term land tenure and an incubator for Hmong farmers, runs a food aggregation/CSA program to connect members to institutional and retail markets, and successfully secured protective legislative language in 2023 safeguarding HAFA-owned farmland from condemnation. HAFA continues active programming and public engagement into 2026, including farmer training, food hub operations, and community outreach.

Notable achievements

Acquisition of 155-acre HAFA Farm (September 2022)

HAFA purchased and began managing a 155-acre farm in Dakota County to provide long-term land tenure, incubator space and training for Hmong farmers—creating the first known Hmong nonprofit-owned farmland in the region and materially increasing land access for member farmers.

Established food aggregation, CSA and market channels

HAFA built and scaled a food hub and community-supported agriculture (CSA) program that aggregates produce from member farms to supply farmers markets, co-ops, institutions and local families, increasing farmers’ market access and diversified revenue streams.

Policy protection for HAFA land (2023)

In 2023 HAFA secured protective language in Minnesota legislative action that restricts condemnation of HAFA-owned land without the organization’s consent, a milestone for asset protection and community-controlled farmland.
