Teaching Beyond the Square (TBS) is a nonprofit based in New York City that aims to improve the quality of early childhood education through collaborative partnerships with school communities, working with students, educators, and parents to advance developmentally appropriate practices that are more playful, effective, engaging, and equitable.

About TEACHING BEYOND THE SQUARE INC

Teaching Beyond the Square (founded in 2013) supports early childhood educators and school communities by promoting play-based, inquiry-driven pedagogies and by supplying creative, ‘found’ materials that encourage exploration and problem-solving. TBS operates a Materials Center and a mobile Materials Trailer, offers coaching, workshops and videochats for educators, and reports sustained program activity and outreach (consultations with dozens of schools, public workshops, and recurring calendared events in recent years).

Notable achievements

Hosted The Wonder of Learning exhibit

Organized and hosted the 7,000 sq. ft. Wonder of Learning exhibit (Reggio Emilia) in New York, which drew large public and professional audiences and sparked extended professional development and atelier work with schools and communities.

Established Materials Center and Trailer

Built a community Materials Center and launched a Materials Trailer to distribute donated found materials and bring hands-on loose-parts experiences to classrooms; trailer visits are offered free to NYC public schools and are designed to leave classrooms with permanent loose-part collections.

Documented program reach

Since its early work in 2015, TBS reports consulting with 75+ public and independent schools, hosting 1,500+ educators at workshops and symposiums, distributing thousands of pounds of materials to classrooms and communities, and directly impacting over 200 classrooms where their approaches are in daily use.
