The Castro Organ Devotees Association (CODA) exists to preserve and expand the tradition of live theatre/symphonic organ music at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre by providing a musical instrument of significant artistic merit and by offering community, educational, and performance programs that promote the art of the organ.

About CASTRO ORGAN DEVOTEES ASSOCIATION

The Castro Organ Devotees Association (CODA) is a San Francisco‑based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded to preserve the Castro Theatre organ tradition and to commission, fund, and install a large, custom symphonic theatre organ for public performance and education. CODA operates as a donor‑facing charity with an active website, a volunteer board led by long‑time Castro organist David Hegarty, and an explicit program of community, performance, and K–16 educational outreach. In recent years CODA has focused on completing the Castro Symphonic Theatre Organ project (a custom seven‑manual hybrid pipe/digital instrument), fundraising to support installation, and coordinating with the Castro Theatre renovation and reopening (the theatre reopened in February 2026 after an extended renovation period).

Led the design and commissioning of a bespoke seven‑manual, hybrid pipe/digital instrument (the Castro Symphonic Theatre Organ) intended to preserve the Wurlitzer tradition while substantially expanding tonal resources for concerts and education; the console and components were completed and secured pending installation.

Executed fundraising and capital campaign activities in the early 2020s to acquire and hold organ assets; the organization retained significant net assets following those campaigns, demonstrating donor support for the installation and long‑term stewardship of the instrument.

Maintained the public profile of theatre organ music through concert presentations, outreach programming, and partnerships with theatre stakeholders and local arts funders, keeping the Castro organ tradition active during periods when the theatre was closed for renovation.
