About COMPRENEW

Comprenew is a Grand Rapids–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that refurbishes, resells, and responsibly recycles electronic devices while providing secure IT asset disposition services. The organization operates retail/refurbish locations and statewide collection events, and runs programs that donate refurbished computers and provide training to low-income families, school partners, and refugee resettlement organizations. Comprenew combines environmental stewardship (refurbish-before-recycle, zero-landfill/downstream-export policies) with workforce and digital equity work, offering job-readiness and computer-literacy training for at-risk populations. It holds high industry certifications and serves corporate and institutional customers across the Midwest with certified ITAD and data-destruction services.

Notable achievements

Dual R2 & e-Stewards certification

Comprenew holds both Responsible Recycling (R2) and e-Stewards certifications and identifies itself as the only nonprofit e-waste recycler with that dual certification, reflecting rigorous standards for data security, ethical downstream management, and zero-export/zero-landfill commitments.

Connect All Michigan (CAMP) digital-equity program

Since launching its Connect All Michigan initiative, Comprenew has partnered with school districts, social-service and refugee-resettlement organizations to refurbish and donate devices to low-income households and provide training to close the digital divide.

Longstanding recycling & reuse impact

Operating since 1986, Comprenew reports large-scale material diversion and ongoing community collection events (including activity in 2024–2026), and sells refurbished electronics through its retail channels to support mission programming and employment pathways.
