The Building Conservation Trust (BCT) is the 501(c)(3) habitat-creation and restoration program of the Coastal Conservation Association, dedicated to creating, restoring, and protecting marine and estuarine habitats through funded projects, science-based monitoring, and community stewardship.

About BUILDING CONSERVATION TRUST

The Building Conservation Trust is a donor-facing, tax-exempt environmental nonprofit that funds and partners on marine and estuarine habitat restoration projects across U.S. coastlines. BCT supports offshore artificial reefs, marsh and seagrass restoration, floating-island marsh projects, and community STEM outreach programs that use hands-on activities (reef-ball building, marsh planting) to engage students and volunteers. BCT operates as the habitat/restoration arm of the Coastal Conservation Association and works with state agencies, academic scientists, NGOs and corporate partners to design, fund and monitor projects. In recent years the organization has remained active in large reef and marsh projects (including partner reef builds in Louisiana during 2023 and ongoing reefing and restoration work off Texas), and its publicly reported finances show continued grantmaking and project support through 2022–2024.

Notable achievements

Dagger Island restoration (Redfish Bay)

Partnered with CCA Texas, Ducks Unlimited and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to restore and protect seagrass beds and intertidal wetlands in Redfish Bay, protecting and enhancing roughly 5,236 acres of seagrass, intertidal wetlands and coastal islands in the Redfish Bay State Scientific Area.

Large-scale offshore reef construction

Funded and supported multi-site offshore reefing projects such as the Big Man’s and Kate’s Reef efforts off Galveston and multiple Louisiana reef installations, deploying thousands of reef materials (concrete pyramids, railroad ties and recycled platform components) to rebuild benthic habitat and fish structure.

Community restoration and education programs

Ran and supported hands-on restoration and STEM outreach programs — including reef-ball building and floating-island marsh projects — that have engaged students, volunteers and corporate teams and resulted in the deployment of hundreds of reef balls and tens of thousands of square feet of new marsh habitat.
