About THE BROADWAY DANCE LAB INC

The Broadway Dance Lab, Inc. (doing business as Dance Lab New York) is a New York–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2012 by Broadway choreographer Josh Prince to incubate new choreographic work for musical theatre and contemporary dance. DLNY operates year-round Lab Cycles and complementary programs (including mentorships, a NextGen apprenticeship for teens, a Disability-Led Lab, and the Tap Dance Project) that supply resident directors, rehearsal directors, paid company dancers, and studio resources to creators who need an uninterrupted creative process. DLNY’s incubated works have progressed to professional presentations and productions at major venues and platforms; the organization has been actively running Lab Cycles and public programs in 2023–2024 (e.g., multiple Lab Cycle cohorts and the 2024 Tap Dance Project) and continues to hold annual fundraising and recognition events such as The Dance Lab Honors.

Notable achievements

Incubated works produced at major venues

Works developed in DLNY labs have gone on to be presented or produced by prominent organizations and venues (including New York City Center, Alvin Ailey/ADF, Guthrie Theatre, and professional commissions and broadcasts), demonstrating DLNY’s role as a pipeline from incubation to professional presentation.

Sustained paid residency model

DLNY’s core Lab Cycle provides choreographers with paid residencies that include a company of contracted dancers, a rehearsal director, expansive studio time, and administrative/digital support—removing cost barriers and allowing creators to focus on process over product.

Program expansion and youth development

In recent years DLNY expanded programming (NextGen apprenticeships, Connect mentorships, Nexus virtual incubation, Disability-Led Lab, Tap Dance Project) to support a broader range of dancemakers and to provide structured learning and career pathways for emerging artists and teens.
