About University Laboratory School Foundation

The University Laboratory School Foundation (ULSF) is a 501(c)(3) public charity established in 2013 to build an endowment and raise philanthropic support for University Laboratory School (ULS) in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. The foundation manages multiple named funds and delivers grants to the school for capital improvements, academic programs, athletics, arts, and student nutrition. ULSF operates as a donor-facing, volunteer-led development arm for ULS: it organizes annual fundraising events (golf tournaments, galas, giving days and alumni appeals), stewards endowed funds, and collaborates with parents, alumni and school leadership to prioritize needs. In the most recent years the foundation has increased its grantmaking capacity through investment growth and event-based fundraising. ULSF maintains an active online presence, files annual Form 990 returns, and reports growing net assets in recent fiscal years—reflecting both contributed revenue and realized gains from invested endowment funds—while continuing to focus distributions on capital and programmatic needs at ULS.

Notable achievements

Established and grew multi‑fund endowment

Built and now stewards several named funds (including the Jr. Bows General Endowment, Parent Appeal, Leighton Wong Athletic Fund, Music & Secondary Language Fund, and Shizumi Kunioka Food & Nutrition Fund) with the aim of producing a sustainable annual distribution to support ULS operations and programs.

Significant asset growth (recent fiscal years)

Reported sustained growth in net assets across the 2022–2024 fiscal years, with the foundation’s reported assets increasing substantially as fundraising, investment income, and occasional asset sales have grown the endowment and available grant resources.

Regular donor events and campaigns

Organized recurring donor-facing events—annual gala and golf tournament, alumni appeals, and a school-wide giving day—that have increased community engagement and generated material unrestricted and restricted gifts for school priorities.
