About Bay Scholars

Bay Scholars is a San Francisco–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that awards multi-year scholarships and provides sustained support so talented, low-income students can attend top college-preparatory Catholic high schools across the Bay Area. The organization was founded in 2008 and is recognized by the IRS under EIN 46-3467919.

Beyond tuition assistance, Bay Scholars offers mentorship, enrichment experiences, and ongoing community supports designed to help scholars persist, graduate high school, and pursue higher education. In recent years the organization has scaled its work through major philanthropic investments and expanded partnerships with a network of Bay Area Catholic college-preparatory high schools.

Recent activity includes a major matching initiative launched in 2024 that accelerated scholarship growth; as of 2025 Bay Scholars reports serving 500+ students and partnering with 18 high schools, with more than $14 million awarded in scholarships since inception.

Sobrato Challenge (2024)

A $2.5 million lead gift from John A. Sobrato in 2024 launched the Sobrato Challenge and catalyzed additional matching funds, substantially increasing the number of scholarships awarded and accelerating organizational growth.

Scaled scholar network and partnerships
