About KENT SCHOOL SERVICES NETWORK

Kent School Services Network (KSSN) is a community-school initiative based in Grand Rapids, Michigan that coordinates integrated services inside K-12 schools across Kent County to remove barriers to student learning. KSSN places Community School Coordinators at each site and partners with local health, social service, and education organizations to deliver physical and mental health supports, before- and after-school programming, family education, and other on-site resources. KSSN began community school work in 2006 and formalized as an independent 501(c)(3) organization on February 1, 2014. The organization uses the Coalition for Community Schools’ standards and data-driven planning to guide school transformation and also provides technical assistance and training to other districts and communities. In recent years KSSN has expanded its network and demonstrated measurable growth and public support, including a multi-district footprint (currently operating in dozens of schools across Kent County) and a first-ever state investment to scale community school services. KSSN publishes regular news and annual review materials and files IRS Form 990s indicating ongoing, active operations.

Notable achievements

First-ever $1 million state investment

KSSN secured a $1,000,000 state grant to support and scale community school services in Kent County (announced December 2025), marking a significant public-sector endorsement and investment in its model.

Network expansion

The initiative has grown from pilot work in 2006 to operating in dozens of schools across Kent County — the organization's public materials report service to roughly 40–50 community schools across multiple districts, increasing access to coordinated supports for thousands of students and families.

Formal nonprofit status and statewide model

KSSN transitioned from a local initiative to an independent 501(c)(3) on February 1, 2014 and has been cited as a model for Michigan’s Pathways to Potential statewide community school efforts and for technical assistance in other counties and states.
