EXPLORATION GREEN CONSERVANCY
To create, maintain, and operate Exploration Green’s natural habitats and recreation facilities, support the use of the area for stormwater management, and provide environmental education and outdoor learning opportunities for current and future members of the Clear Lake community.
About EXPLORATION GREEN CONSERVANCY
Exploration Green Conservancy is a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) based in Southeast Houston that stewards Exploration Green, a 200‑acre urban green space combining permanent stormwater detention, wetlands, wildlife habitat and recreation. The Green includes roughly 40 acres of wetlands and multiple permanent detention lakes and is home to more than 1,000 native species. The Conservancy operates as a public‑private partner with the Clear Lake City Water Authority and other regional partners to deliver nature-based flood mitigation, habitat restoration, accessible trails and environmental education. Construction of the final phase of the detention lakes was completed in fall 2023; the Conservancy continues habitat plantings, volunteer programs and development of visitor amenities (tree plantings and site enhancements are ongoing into 2025–2026). The organization focuses on conservation, restoration, community engagement and hands‑on learning through volunteer workdays, guided hikes, youth programs and public events that activate the Green as both a working stormwater facility and a living classroom.
Notable achievements
Final Phase Completed (Fall 2023)
Construction of the Green’s final detention-lake phase was finished in fall 2023, completing the multi‑phase project that provides large-scale natural stormwater detention and community recreation.
Large-Scale Nature-Based Flood Mitigation
The project repurposed a former golf course into a 200‑acre integrated landscape with multiple permanent lakes and wetlands capable of significant stormwater detention (hundreds of millions of gallons), while providing public trails and habitat.
Habitat Restoration & Community Stewardship
Ongoing native-planting, restoration and volunteer programs have established and protected habitat supporting over 1,000 native species and built active community stewardship through recurring events and education opportunities.
