About HAWAIIAN LEGACY REFORESTATION INITIATIVE

Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative (HLRI) is a Honolulu-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2014 that restores endemic Hawaiian forests on Hawaiʻi Island and Oʻahu by planting and stewarding native tree species. The organization combines forest restoration, carbon offset projects, technology-enabled tree tracking, and partnerships with local businesses and tourism to finance and scale its work. As of 2026 HLRI reports over 600,000 endemic trees planted and nearly 1,200 acres of restored native habitat across multiple Legacy Forest sites, and operates a Gold Standard–certified forest carbon program. In the past 2–3 years HLRI has expanded forest acreage, rolled out advanced tree-mapping/monitoring tools, and continued partnerships with hotels and local organizations to fund and promote ecosystem recovery and watershed protection.

Notable achievements

600,000+ Trees Planted

By 2026 HLRI reports planting more than 609,000 endemic Hawaiian trees (koa, ʻōhiʻa, sandalwood and others), restoring formerly degraded pasture and agricultural lands into functioning native habitat.

Gold Standard Carbon Certification

HLRI’s Legacy Forest carbon project is certified under the Gold Standard for afforestation/carbon credits, positioning it as a high-integrity, third-party validated forest carbon program.

TreeTracker Mapping & Monitoring

HLRI developed and deployed technology to assign unique tracking IDs and spatial mapping for individual trees, enabling long-term monitoring of tree health, growth, and provenance.
