About Rethink The Conversation, Ltd.
Rethink The Conversation, Ltd. is a New York–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that develops media-driven public education programs to change how people talk about stigmatized issues, with a primary focus on mental health and suicide loss. The organization produces curricular and media resources (including facilitator training and companion materials) that are intended for schools, families, professionals, and community groups. Its signature work includes the Conversation Masterclass facilitator training and the documentary film Talking OutLOUD: Teens & Suicide Loss, which is distributed in multiple lengths with companion resources for teens, parents, professionals, and schools. The organization is led by founder, president, and CEO Joanne L. Harpel, who brings multi-decade experience in program development, public education, and suicide postvention; Rethink The Conversation partners with survivor groups, clinicians, educators, and creative professionals to amplify lived experience and practical guidance for audiences.
Notable achievements
Talking OutLOUD documentary premiere
Produced and debuted the documentary Talking OutLOUD: Teens & Suicide Loss (available in 60-, 30-, and 15-minute versions) to public audiences, using peer voices to address teen grief after suicide and to provide entry points for family and school conversations.
Conversation Masterclass facilitator training
Developed a facilitator training (Conversation Masterclass) and companion materials to prepare educators, clinicians, and community leaders to run conversations and support groups that reduce stigma and improve postvention practice.
Sustained program delivery (2023)
Maintained active program operations and public distribution of resources during recent years, supported by annual fundraising and program revenue, enabling ongoing outreach to schools, families, and professional communities.
