About DENNIS & VICTORIA ROSS FOUNDATION

The Dennis & Victoria Ross Foundation (DVRF) is a private nonprofit foundation established in 2014 in New York City that advances educational programming, public debate, and the development of emerging artists across theatrical and literary disciplines. The foundation runs the annual Hitchens Prize for writers and journalists and operates a Playwrights Program that develops new work through readings and small presentations.

In recent years DVRF has focused its Playwrights Program on developer readings (a shift begun in 2023) and continued to present the Hitchens Prize (most recently awarded in 2024). The foundation both directly supports writers and producers and sometimes co-produces new work, helping projects move from development into public production and critical recognition.

Hitchens Prize (annual)

DVRF established and awards the annual Hitchens Prize to authors or journalists whose work reflects vigorous public inquiry and free expression; recent recipients include high-profile cultural figures through 2024.

Shift to developmental readings (2023–present)

Beginning in 2023 the Playwrights Program restructured from a single large presentation to a series of smaller, professional readings and cohorts to expand developmental opportunities for emerging playwrights and reduce barriers to hearing new work aloud.

Co‑production and support of produced plays

DVRF helped develop and co-produce the initial run of a critically noticed production of Uncle Vanya (transferred in 2024), demonstrating the foundation's role in moving selected projects from development into public staging and award consideration.
