About JACKSONVILLE ARTS AND MUSIC SCHOOL
Jacksonville Arts & Music School (JAMS) is a Jacksonville, FL-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts education organization that provides year-round afterschool, summer, and in-school programming in music, dance, theater, visual art, film/digital media and leadership development. Founded in 2014 and operating a renovated community facility since 2016, JAMS focuses on creative youth development, workforce/career readiness and measurable leadership training for under-resourced young people.
In the last 2–3 years JAMS has expanded signature initiatives (notably the What A Leader competition and the CreatED professional development offerings), deepened municipal partnerships (including program delivery aligned with Kids Hope Alliance priorities), and reported substantial program growth and hours of professional development delivered to students and teaching artists. The organization maintains active philanthropic and municipal partnerships and a sustained public presence through events, conferences, and a performing/teaching Black Box venue.
Notable achievements
Facility acquisition and launch
Secured and renovated the former Seafarers Union building to create a permanent 12,000+ sq. ft. headquarters; the site opened for student programming beginning in 2016 and has supported expanded afterschool and summer offerings.
What A Leader (WAL) program scale
Created the WAL leadership curriculum and competition (launched 2021–present) to build confidence, critical thinking and professional skills; the program expanded in recent years, serving hundreds of students annually and offering scholarship incentives tied to performance.
Program and partnership growth
Expanded program reach and capacity through multi-year partnerships and philanthropic support, launched the CreatED professional development conference and a Black Box performance venue, and increased enrollment and hours of instruction across arts and career-readiness programs.
