About TWIN LAKES STEM ACADEMY

Twin Lakes STEM Academy is a tuition-free public K–8 charter school in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, focused on STEM instruction and whole-child development. Founded in 2014 as Tesfa International School, the organization rebranded as Twin Lakes STEM Academy and implemented a comprehensive STEM curriculum to provide hands-on, real-world learning and career-connected skills. The school emphasizes measurable student growth and serves a student population with high proportions of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and multilingual learners; it has expanded grade offerings and childcare programming in recent years.

Top-5% Student Growth

Reported student growth in reading and mathematics ranked in the top 5% in the state according to Minnesota growth/’North Star’ measures, demonstrating sustained academic progress for its enrolled students.

Middle School Expansion (7–8)

Received authorizer approval to add 7th grade for the 2024–2025 school year and 8th grade for 2025–2026, transitioning the school to K–8 programming and adding rotating content-area classes and expanded extracurriculars.

Rebrand, Facility Upgrade & STEM Partnership

Transitioned from Tesfa International School to Twin Lakes STEM Academy and moved into a larger facility (effective July 2021) with significant renovations and investments to support STEM programs; established curriculum alignment with Project Lead The Way (PLTW) for hands-on STEM instruction.
