About PACIFIC AMERICAN FOUNDATION HAWAII, INC.

Pacific American Foundation Hawaii, Inc. (PAF Hawai‘i) is a Native Hawaiian–led nonprofit based in Kailua, Oʻahu, that stewards Waikalua Loko Iʻa (a historic fishpond) and delivers culturally grounded, research-based learning and leadership programs for schools and communities. The organization operates after-school and community-school programs, educational curricula, and place-based ʻāina stewardship initiatives in partnership with the Hawaii Department of Education, University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant, Windward Community College, and other local partners. In recent years PAF Hawai‘i has expanded its aquaculture research and workforce-development work through the Waikalua Aquatic Initiative Partnership and has pursued state and federal grant funding to scale native limu and fish-production research while continuing hands-on school and community programming.

Notable achievements

Waikalua Loko Iʻa Restoration & Stewardship

PAF Hawai‘i is the steward and long‑term caretaker of the Waikalua Loko Iʻa fishpond complex (a roughly 400‑year‑old loko iʻa). The organization has run restoration and stewardship activities since the mid‑1990s and developed community workdays, field trips, and curricula that have engaged thousands of residents and students.

Expanded Place‑based Education and After‑school Reach

PAF Hawai‘i has scaled culturally grounded education services including after‑school programs, community schools and the 21st Century Community Learning Centers model, delivering sustained programming across multiple Title I schools on the Windward side of Oʻahu and reaching hundreds of students annually.

Waikalua Aquatic Initiative Partnership (Research & Workforce)

Beginning in the early 2020s PAF Hawai‘i partnered with UH Sea Grant and Windward Community College to launch applied aquaculture research (native limu and fish species) and workforce training; the initiative has been used to pursue state grant support and to pilot methods for scaling locally produced seafood and limu for community use.
