About WAIKIKI BEACH SPECIAL IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT ASSOCIATION

The Waikīkī Beach Special Improvement District Association (WBSIDA) is a private non‑profit formed under the Honolulu Special Improvement District ordinance to coordinate, fund and implement beach management, restoration and resilience work for Waikīkī Beach. WBSIDA operates as a public‑private partnership working with state and county agencies, the University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant, local stakeholders and the Waikīkī Improvement Association to plan and carry out science‑based projects. In the last several years WBSIDA has led planning, permitting and funding activities for large beach maintenance and resilience efforts — including the programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for the Waikīkī Beach Improvement and Maintenance Program and site restoration pilots — to protect beach width, nearshore reefs and the visitor and local economy that depends on Waikīkī.

Notable achievements

Final Waikīkī Beach Improvements Programmatic EIS (2024)

WBSIDA led and coordinated the multi‑partner effort that resulted in a Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for the Waikīkī Beach Improvement and Maintenance Program, establishing preferred approaches and enabling the next phase of design, permitting and construction for prioritized beach improvement projects.

Waikīkī Beach Maintenance Phase II (2021)

WBSIDA partnered with state agencies to complete a hydraulic dredging and beach nourishment project that placed roughly 20–21,000 cubic yards of marine sand on Waikīkī shoreline, restoring beach width (estimated 25–50 feet) and demonstrating a near‑term maintenance model for the district.

Secured Project Design Funding for Resilience Pilot (2025)

In partnership with local stakeholders, WBSIDA secured dedicated funding to support plans and design for the Waikīkī Resilience and Sea Level Rise Adaptation Project (Kawehewehe Beach Restoration Pilot), advancing site‑specific adaptation work to address shoreline recession and sea level rise.
