Vail Mountain Rescue Group
Vail Mountain Rescue Group (VMRG) is a volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides backcountry search and rescue and public education on backcountry safety in Eagle County, Colorado. The team operates under the authority of the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office and is nationally accredited through the Mountain Rescue Association (MRA).
About Vail Mountain Rescue Group
VMRG is an all-volunteer search-and-rescue organization focused on locating, stabilizing, and evacuating lost or injured people in the backcountry around Vail and Eagle County. All rescue services are provided free of charge.
In addition to field operations, VMRG runs community education and prevention programs (safety presentations, pack lists, avalanche awareness) and maintains readiness through regular technical training and equipment maintenance.
VMRG is a long-established local resource (founded in 1985) that also supports mutual-aid requests across Colorado and maintains specialized capabilities including hoist/technical rescue teams and multi-agency coordination.
Notable achievements
National Accreditation (MRA)
VMRG maintains national certification through the Mountain Rescue Association and participates in statewide collaborative teams such as the Colorado Hoist Rescue Team and Colorado Search & Rescue Association.
Sustained Operational Capacity
Built and operates from a dedicated Edwards headquarters (including training spaces and equipment cache) and maintains a diverse fleet and technical gear to support year-round missions.
High-Impact Recent Operations
In the last 2–3 years VMRG has led and supported multiple complex searches and evacuations (including high-profile searches in 2024 and hoist/technical rescues in 2025), and has reported high mission volumes during recent seasons.
