About BAY AREA YOUNG SURVIVORS BAYS INC

This profile covers Bay Area Young Survivors (BAYS), EIN 51-0647928; the EIN and organization identity were confirmed against the organization’s publicly posted Form 990 filings and nonprofit registry records.

BAYS is a volunteer- and survivor-led 501(c)(3) founded to break the isolation of young people living with breast cancer. The organization offers peer-led in-person and virtual support groups, separate metastatic peer support, educational workshops, community events, resource navigation, and emergency financial assistance tailored to people diagnosed at age 45 or younger.

In the last 2–3 years BAYS has expanded public-facing programming and community initiatives, including a public Breast Cancer Memorial Garden project in Golden Gate Park, a community 5K (Steps for Strength) to support programming, and targeted DEI/health-equity programming for BIPOC and Spanish-speaking members. BAYS remains primarily volunteer-run and reports its recent tax filings on its website.

Notable achievements

Sustained peer-led support network since 2003

Founded in 2003, BAYS has grown into an established, survivor-led community serving hundreds of young people living with breast cancer in the Bay Area through recurring support groups, workshops, and member services.

Breast Cancer Memorial Garden (Golden Gate Park)

BAYS led the development and public launch of the Bay Area Young Survivors Breast Cancer Memorial Garden in Golden Gate Park, a city-partnered memorial project launched in 2024–2025 to honor lives lost to metastatic breast cancer and provide a permanent, public space of remembrance and support.

Launched community fundraising and awareness events

BAYS established community fundraising events (including the Steps for Strength 5K and signature annual galas) in recent years to increase unrestricted revenue for member programs, expand emergency financial assistance, and support new program growth.
