About KUPU

Kupu is a Honolulu-based 501(c)(3) organization that connects youth and young adults with paid work, training, and service-learning opportunities in conservation, sustainability, and natural-resources careers. The organization operates a network of programs — including the Hawaiʻi Youth Conservation Corps, Kupu ʻĀina Corps, environmental education, and professional development for educators — that combine hands-on restoration, workforce development, and cultural stewardship. In recent years Kupu has expanded programming across the U.S. Pacific, operated social enterprises to sustain training pathways, and received multi-year funding to support post-disaster economic resilience and workforce placements.

Notable achievements

Large-scale ecological restoration and stewardship

Since its founding, Kupu participants have carried out extensive restoration work across the Hawaiian Islands, collectively removing invasive species at large scale and planting hundreds of thousands to millions of native plants to restore culturally and ecologically important landscapes.

Workforce and youth training scale-up

Kupu runs multi-month paid corps and internship programs that have enrolled hundreds of youth and young adults annually, providing on-the-job training, certifications, and pathways into renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and natural-resources careers.

Hoʻokupu Center social enterprise

Kupu revitalized and operates the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Hoʻokupu Center and complementary social enterprises (event venue, food services) that both generate earned revenue and create hands-on hospitality and catering training opportunities for program participants.
