About NATIONAL FILM PRESERVATION FOUNDATION

The National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF) is an independent, nonprofit, grantmaking public charity based in San Francisco and established to support the preservation and public accessibility of America's film heritage. It serves as the nonprofit affiliate of the Library of Congress’s National Film Preservation Board and works with archives, museums, libraries, and universities nationwide. Through federally funded grant programs, targeted partnerships (including international collaborations), publication projects, and an expanding online Screening Room/streaming initiative, the NFPF has supported the preservation and public exhibition of thousands of historically and culturally significant films that otherwise might have been lost. The foundation produces the Treasures from American Film Archives DVD and publication series and funds access projects (including recent 4K scanning and streaming work) to make preserved titles available for education and exhibition.

Large-scale film preservation

Supported the preservation of thousands of American films (the organization’s 2023 filings report 2,776 films preserved and made publicly available through NFPF programs) across a wide range of genres and formats, saving rare features, documentaries, experimental films, and local/community productions.

Treasures from American Film Archives series

Produced the influential Treasures from American Film Archives DVD and publication series that packages preservation projects with scholarly notes to advance public access, education, and research in film history.

Digital access and streaming initiatives
