Colorado Police Canine Association (CPCA)
CPCA is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit that develops professional standards for law‑enforcement K9 handlers in Colorado and provides training, certification, and health/retirement support for police service dogs.
About Colorado Police Canine Association (CPCA)
Founded in 2003, the Colorado Police Canine Association (CPCA) establishes minimum performance standards, runs certification events, and offers training and professional development for police K9 teams across Colorado (standards are approved by state law‑enforcement bodies).
CPCA operates an annual certification program and a Health & Care fund to assist with medical and retirement needs for retired K9s; since 2003 it has issued hundreds of certifications and remains an all‑volunteer organization.
In recent years CPCA has continued active certification and training work: membership and team participation have grown (membership totals exceeded 120 teams statewide in 2024–2025) and individual K9 teams were certified in late 2024 and mid‑2025 as part of the association’s regular certification cycles.
Notable achievements
State‑level accreditation
CPCA standards have been formally approved by Colorado law‑enforcement leadership and are recognized by the state Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) board as the accepted certification pathway for many agencies.
Hundreds of certifications
Since its founding CPCA has administered hundreds of K9 certifications and remains a primary certifying organization used by Colorado agencies for annual recertification.
Sustained membership growth
Membership and agency participation grew in the 2023–2025 period, with CPCA supporting well over 100 K9 teams from dozens of agencies statewide during recent certification cycles.
