About JACKSONVILLE AREA LEGAL AID INC

Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA) is a nonprofit civil legal services organization founded in 1937 that provides free and low-cost legal assistance across Northeast Florida. It focuses on housing, consumer and debtor rights, family law, domestic violence, immigration, veterans’ benefits, elder law, and other civil matters affecting low-income and special-needs individuals and families.

JALA operates multiple county offices and outreach sites serving Duval, Clay, Nassau, St. Johns and neighboring counties, and combines direct representation with community legal education, pro bono coordination, and targeted initiatives (for example medical-legal partnership and elder housing legal services). Recent years have seen expansion of program funding, new endowment fundraising success, and continued emphasis on eviction prevention and housing stability for vulnerable clients.

Notable achievements

Major Funding Florida grant (2025)

In January 2025 JALA was awarded a substantial grant from Funding Florida Legal Aid (a multi-million dollar distribution) that enabled the organization to expand staff capacity, add attorneys for priority practice areas, and scale pro bono and consumer protection projects.

Endowment for Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership

Through the multi-year Freed to Run fundraising campaign and matching support, JALA helped establish a permanent endowment to support the Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership, securing long-term funding for legal services that assist pediatric patients and families with legal issues that affect health outcomes.

Shelter for Elders initiative & Freed-to-Run fundraiser

JALA launched a Shelter for Elders initiative to preserve housing for vulnerable seniors and has sustained an annual Freed-to-Run fundraising effort (now a recurring community endurance event) that raises dedicated funds for housing-related legal services and an elder-services endowment.
