About AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ZOO VETERINARIANS
The American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV) is a Jacksonville, Florida–based professional association for veterinarians and allied professionals who apply comparative veterinary medicine to zoo and wildlife species. With more than 1,000 members worldwide, AAZV produces the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, coordinates an annual scientific conference, funds research through the Wild Animal Health Fund, and provides clinical guidance and policy expertise to improve animal health and welfare.
AAZV functions as both a member-service organization (continuing education, professional development, conferences, and practice resources) and a funder/convener for scientific research that advances zoo and wildlife veterinary medicine. In the last several years AAZV published the 7th edition of its Zoo and Aquarium Veterinary Medical Program and Hospital Guidelines (2024), administered Wild Animal Health Fund research grants (annual awards across multiple projects in 2024–2026), and supported rapid-response guidance for emerging threats to managed and free-ranging wildlife.
Notable achievements
Journal of Zoo & Wildlife Medicine
AAZV publishes the peer-reviewed Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, a primary scientific outlet for veterinary research on zoo and wild animals with institutional and member circulation that informs clinical practice and conservation medicine globally.
Wild Animal Health Fund (research grants)
Through the Wild Animal Health Fund (a program of AAZV), the association has run a competitive grant program since 2012 that regularly awards dozens of small and standard research grants (typical award categories include up to $20,000 for standard grants and up to $7,500 for small grants) to advance diagnostics, anesthesia, disease surveillance, and conservation-relevant veterinary science.
Veterinary Program & Hospital Guidelines (7th ed.)
AAZV produced and released the 7th edition of the Zoo and Aquarium Veterinary Medical Program and Hospital Guidelines (published 2024), a widely used reference for designing and operating zoo/aquarium veterinary services and facilities.
