Mission

The Hawaiʻi Workers Center envisions a Hawaiʻi in which all workers are empowered to exercise their right to organize for their social, economic, and political well-being. The Center provides information, education, training and community organizing to defend worker rights and improve working conditions across the state.

About HAWAII WORKERS CENTER

Hawaii Workers Center (HWC) is a Honolulu-based, donor-facing 501(c)(3) organization that organizes low-wage and immigrant workers across the islands, provides Know Your Workers’ Rights (KYWR) trainings and wage-theft clinics, and coordinates community advocacy campaigns. In recent years HWC has led statewide legislative advocacy (paid sick leave, paid family leave, tip-credit reform), organized annual May Day marches and worker rallies (2023–2025), and convened the Defend & Respect Hawaiʻi’s Workers coalition of labor and community partners. HWC also provides direct case assistance: in 2024 it worked with federal and state labor agencies to recover back wages for workers, has supported Maui disaster recovery and tenant-worker campaigns, and continues community outreach through trainings and clinics targeted to COFA residents, Filipino workers, youth, and other vulnerable groups.

Notable achievements

Recovered back wages for kitchen workers

In 2024 HWC worked with the U.S. Department of Labor and state agencies to help 23 Max’s Restaurant kitchen workers recover over $307,000 in back wages and damages after wage and overtime misclassification.

Secured major foundation support

HWC received substantial philanthropic support in recent funding cycles, including a six-figure grant from Hawaiʻi Community Foundation and additional program grants from national funders, enabling expansion of trainings, wage-theft clinics, and Maui recovery advocacy.

Built a statewide workers’ coalition

HWC launched and convenes the Defend & Respect Hawaiʻi’s Workers coalition (formed 2021) which brings together more than 40 unions, community organizations, and advocacy groups to coordinate campaigns, legislative advocacy, and large public actions.
