About The Mule Deer Foundation
The Mule Deer Foundation is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated exclusively to restoring, improving, and protecting mule deer and black‑tailed deer habitat across the American West. MDF delivers landscape‑scale habitat projects, migration‑corridor work, and partner‑driven research to sustain healthy, huntable deer populations.
In recent years MDF has expanded large landscape treatments and partnership grants (including multi‑million dollar state and federal grants) to address wildfire risk, restore aspen and sagebrush communities, and improve fence and road connectivity for migrating herds while continuing youth outreach and hunting heritage programs.
Notable achievements
Record Utah funding in 2025
For the 2026 fiscal allocations MDF committed $2.5 million to multiple Utah landscape projects (as part of a larger watershed and fuels‑reduction partnership), enabling large‑scale aspen and sagebrush restoration and fuel treatments.
Federal and state grants for migration and fencing work
In the last 2–3 years MDF received and applied competitive grants (including Interior/DOI funding) to extend wildlife funnel fencing, retrofit and remove miles of barrier fencing, and improve passage success on key herd migration routes.
Large landscape forest and fuels projects
MDF has established multi‑year stewardship agreements with national forests and completed extensive fuel‑reduction and restoration treatments (hundreds to over a thousand acres in multi‑phase projects) to improve habitat resilience and connectivity.
