About NEW CENTURY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

New Century Chamber Orchestra (New Century) is a San Francisco–based, 19‑member conductorless string ensemble founded in 1992 that performs chamber‑orchestra repertoire and commissions new works. The ensemble operates year‑round in the Bay Area, presenting programs in small‑venue settings and producing cross‑genre collaborations and education/outreach initiatives. Under Music Director Daniel Hope (appointed for the 2018–19 season), New Century has increased its international profile, expanded its commissioning activity, and released a major recording on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Recent seasons (including 2023 and the 2024–25 season) emphasize new commissions, high‑profile guest artists, and collaborative projects with regional institutions.

Notable achievements

Debut recording on Deutsche Grammophon (June 2, 2023)

Released Music for a New Century (June 2, 2023), the orchestra’s debut recording for Deutsche Grammophon featuring pianist Alexey Botvinov and Music Director Daniel Hope; the program collects four works that were commissioned or co‑commissioned by New Century and highlights the ensemble’s commitment to contemporary repertoire.

Significant contemporary commissions & premieres

Commissioned and premiered new works by leading composers in recent years, including pieces by Tan Dun (Double Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings, 2021), Mark‑Anthony Turnage (Lament for Solo Violin and String Orchestra, 2018–19), Jake Heggie (Overture, 2023), and presentation of Philip Glass’s Piano Concerto No. 3 within New Century programs.

Expanded touring and season programming

Raised international profile through European touring led by Daniel Hope (including an inaugural European tour in June 2019 and further European activity in 2023) and broadened Bay Area programming in 2024–25 with collaborations featuring artists such as Inon Barnatan and Brandee Younger and the organization’s first program presented in partnership with SFJAZZ.
