About CRESTED BUTTE MOUNTAIN BIKE ASSOCIATION

Founded in 1983, the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association (CBMBA) is the oldest mountain bike club in continual operation and is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Over decades the organization has grown into a regional trail steward, maintaining 450+ miles of singletrack in the Crested Butte/Gunnison Valley area.

CBMBA operates through a mix of volunteer trail workdays, community rides and events, advocacy, and a professional stewardship crew (the Crested Butte Conservation Corps, CBCC). The organization also grooms and maintains free winter trails for fat-biking and other non-motorized winter users.

In the last 2–3 years CBMBA has advanced multi-year trail planning and construction (including the North Valley Trails Project approval), expanded on-the-ground stewardship capacity via the CBCC seasonal reports, and secured major local grants to support continued trail building and maintenance.

Notable achievements

Founded 1983 — oldest continuous mountain bike club

Established as a rider-led club in 1983, CBMBA has grown into a professional nonprofit steward responsible for hundreds of miles of trails and long-term community stewardship programs.

North Valley Trails Project approval (2024)

CBMBA partnered with the Gunnison Ranger District to receive final approval for the North Valley Trails Project, enabling roughly nine miles of new trail construction plus trailhead and parking infrastructure to improve network connectivity and safety.

CBCC measurable annual impacts

Through the Crested Butte Conservation Corps, CBMBA reports multi-year, measurable field impacts (for example: clearing hundreds of trees, working dozens of trail miles, engaging thousands of people, and removing over a thousand pounds of trash per year), underscoring sustained stewardship outcomes.
