About BAY AREA DERBY GIRLS (operating as Bay Area Derby)

Bay Area Derby Girls (doing business as Bay Area Derby) is a skater-owned, volunteer-run 501(c)(3) flat-track roller derby league founded in 2004 and based in the San Francisco Bay Area (headquartered in Oakland). The league fields home teams and travel teams, operates a training/recreational program and junior development programs, and is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).

The organization emphasizes inclusivity, equity, safety, community engagement and democratic governance; it actively programs public bouts, youth/junior skating opportunities, and community events that serve queer, trans, disabled, and underrepresented athletes. In the last 2–3 years the league has resumed regular public bouts and events following the pandemic, celebrated its 20th anniversary season (2024), and hosted Pride-themed community games and youth programming.

Notable achievements

Sustained organization since 2004 / 20th Anniversary

Founded in 2004, the league has operated continuously for two decades and celebrated its 20th anniversary season in 2024, returning to regular public bouts and community events following the COVID-era disruptions.

Competitive WFTDA presence

Bay Area Derby’s All‑Stars have qualified for WFTDA playoffs and championships in the league’s competitive history and have been ranked among the association’s higher-tier teams during peak seasons, demonstrating sustained competitive impact on the national roller derby stage.

Expanded youth and community programs

The league supports junior roller derby/skating programs and local outreach (including school-based 'Skater Tots' style lessons historically and ongoing junior development), and has hosted themed community events (for example Pride games) that combine sport with civic engagement.
