About MENTAL HEALTH AMERICA OF GREATER HOUSTON INC

Mental Health America of Greater Houston (MHA of Greater Houston) is a Houston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1954 that provides community-based mental health education, early identification, care navigation, training, and advocacy across the Greater Houston region and increasingly across Texas. The organization operates programs for children and schools, veterans, workplaces, and the general public (including Care Connect, an online provider search and helpline), offers free anonymous mental health screenings, and runs training initiatives to integrate mental health into primary care and schools. MHA of Greater Houston also leads statewide collaborative policy work on school mental health and partners with hospitals, foundations, insurers, and civic organizations to expand access to culturally responsive services.

Notable achievements

Large scale screenings (2023)

Conducted thousands of free, anonymous mental health screenings for Greater Houston residents (reporting over 10,900 screenings in the 2023 impact report), using screening results to link people to resources and referrals.

Behavioral Health Consultant Certificate Course (launched 2023)

Launched a first‑of‑its‑kind Behavioral Health Consultant Certificate Course in Texas (February 2023) to equip clinicians for integrated primary‑care behavioral health work; the first cohort completed the program (course graduates reported in the impact materials).

Led statewide school mental health collaboration

Led a statewide Collaborative Task Force on Public School Mental Health Services and released a Year‑3 report offering data and 28 policy solutions to strengthen school‑based mental health supports across Texas.
