About HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA FOUNDATION

Houston Public Media Foundation is the nonprofit, donor-facing support organization that sustains Houston Public Media (KUHT TV8/PBS, KUHF News 88.7/NPR and HPM Classical). It is the fundraising and membership arm that cultivates community resources to underwrite local journalism, arts and educational programming licensed to the University of Houston. In recent years the foundation has led major membership and resiliency fundraising efforts to support local news and service after federal funding changes; it also supports collaborative statewide reporting initiatives and community-focused content that reach audiences across southeast Texas.

Notable achievements

Historic public television legacy

Supports KUHT (TV 8), the nation’s first educational/noncommercial television station (began broadcasting in 1953), preserving a long legacy of local production and educational programming.

Resiliency Fund and membership growth

Launched targeted resiliency and membership drives after federal funding changes to stabilize operations and bridge budget gaps, preserving local newsrooms and sustaining service for Houston audiences.

Statewide journalism collaboration

Serves as a primary participant and production hub in The Texas Newsroom and other multi-station collaborations, enabling enterprise investigative and statewide reporting that benefits local audiences.
