The Montrose Center empowers our community—primarily lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals and their families—to live healthier, more fulfilling lives through culturally affirming and affordable behavioral health and prevention services.
About THE MONTROSE CENTER
The Montrose Center is Houston’s primary LGBTQ community center and behavioral health provider. Founded in 1978 (originally as the Montrose Counseling Center), it delivers integrated services including licensed mental-health counseling, substance use recovery, HIV/STI testing and care, anti-violence and crisis response, youth programming, and affordable senior housing. The organization operates a community center that hosts hundreds of events and peer-support groups, runs targeted programs for youth and transgender clients, provides housing and case management for people living with HIV and for unstably housed youth, and manages the Law Harrington Senior Living Center—an LGBTQ-affirming affordable senior housing community. In recent years the Center has expanded emergency shelter and youth housing partnerships and continues to receive public and private grants to support prevention, behavioral-health workforce training, and HOPWA housing services.
Notable achievements
Opened Law Harrington Senior Living Center
In 2021 the Montrose Center opened the Law Harrington Senior Living Center, a 112-unit affordable, LGBTQ-affirming senior living community (the facility houses roughly 115 residents) that provides integrated services, on-site wellness supports, and a large meal and programming operation for seniors.
FY24 direct service scale
In Fiscal Year 2024 (Sept 1, 2023–Aug 31, 2024) the Montrose Center reported serving 6,025 direct clients and impacting 55,218 people through community center programming and outreach; youth services supported 834 young people and the senior diner program delivered more than 30,000 meals.
Launched Asia’s House emergency shelter
In partnership with Grace Place, the Montrose Center helped open Asia’s House—the city’s LGBTQ-affirming emergency shelter for youth ages 15–17—expanding the Center’s housing continuum for unstably housed LGBTQ young people.
