About Colorado Judicial Institute
Founded in 1979, the Colorado Judicial Institute (CJI) is an independent, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit (Tax ID 74-2119505) focused on preserving public trust in Colorado’s judicial system and on supporting judicial quality and education.
CJI carries out that mission through public education (explainers and outreach programs), learning events and CLEs for the legal community, financial support for judicial continuing education, and annual awards that honor judicial excellence.
In the past 2–3 years CJI has continued statewide outreach and programming (including CLEs and public forums), hosted its annual Judicial Excellence Gala, launched an inaugural Thought Leadership Forum on AI (Nov 6, 2025), and sustained fundraising for judicial education programs.
Notable achievements
Longstanding statewide nonprofit
Established in 1979 to protect Colorado’s merit selection system, CJI has operated for decades as the state’s independent, nonpartisan advocate for judicial excellence and public education about the courts.
Annual Judicial Excellence Gala
Operates a major annual gala that recognizes outstanding judges and raises funds for judicial education programs (the 23rd Judicial Excellence Gala was held on October 15, 2025).
Thought Leadership programming
Launched an inaugural Thought Leadership Forum in 2025 on AI and the legal community (held Nov 6, 2025), expanding CJI’s programming to timely, system-focused policy and ethics discussions.
